The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) formed Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) in 1988, with the goal of setting standards for coding and transmitting audio and video information in a compressed format. There are several digital compression formats standardized by MPEG, each specifying a particular set of tools available, as well as values for the relevant properties. In comparison to other coding formats, MPEG files are smaller, but their quality remains high.

Since online video files are encoded in a variety of codecs, or compression formats, they need to be implemented on a PC. Video files are recognizable by the extension .mpg. In order to play them on your PC, an appropriate MPEG video player has to be installed. Since you have a choice of free video players and commercial ones, keep in mind that the former software may perform more poorly than the one you are required to pay, depending on the power of your processor. If you are using Windows operating system, Windows Media Player and Real Player both support and play MPEG formats. Mac users can do that with QuickTime, while Linux requires software derived from SMPEG and so on.

MPEG free software and shareware are available online. Once you’ve found what you need to compress video files and play them back on your player, look for sources that offer mpeg movie trailers free download.
